Documenting My Journey: Embracing Identity and Writing

Writing has always been therapeutic for me. I’ve been writing since I was a child. The age of 10 comes immediately to me, because I was writing more frequently in 5th grade. But, I can find pieces dating back even earlier. Writing is my calling.

Over the years, I’ve written many (complete and incomplete) short stories, plays, novellas, novels, poems, screenplays, etc. Any form of writing you can think of, I have a piece. Over time I fell off the path of writing in search of other things I was passionate about. Some things came up here and there, but writing got me to where I am today.

So, let’s fast forward to where I am today. Hi, I’m Wes, and I’m a 28 year old trans man. I came out to myself and my wife, Kristen, a little over 6 months ago, back in September 2024. But, the world was just introduced to me only a week ago. Being out and open is very new to me, so why not document it in real time?

But, Wes, why not just journal? That way no one has to read all your personal stuff and also, who cares?

Great point. I do journal, often. That’s where the depths of my mind live. Never to see the light of day. Blogging, in my opinion, is different. I will share only what I care for the public to see, if the public ever sees. Plus, I’m better at typing than physically writing, and I can get more out. As for “who cares,” it doesn’t matter to me. No one is forcing you to read this. Actually, if you’ve even read this far, you obviously do. Otherwise, go scroll on TikTok.

I watched a YouTube video where the guy said every year he writes in a new journal. My previous journaling technique was way more disorganized. I’ve been journaling since elementary school but I had many different notebooks. One day I’d write in one, while the next day I’d write in another. The recorded entries of my childhood are not linear.

So, for 2025, I cracked open a new notebook and titled it “Becoming Wes.” I knew this year I would dedicate to finding myself. It was a goal only my wife and I knew. Of course people have this goal often. Sometimes, people have this goal multiple times a year when they forget they even mentioned it on New Years Day. Shit, I think I’ve set this goal multiple times before, too. The thing is, this is the first year I’ve actively stayed on track with my resolutions. Easy, since my only goal this year was to be myself. Actually, easier said than done. I’ll write another post about my existential crisis in my 20s another time.

Let me just get to the whole reason I’m even starting a blog. When I came out, I expected to get support. The majority of people around me are supportive and welcoming, so I expected as much when I introduced myself to the world. What I didn’t expect was to get texts and DMs about how I’ve helped people.

When I came out, I was doing it for me. I was sick of living 2 lives, and owed it to myself to live just 1. A small part of me was even expecting to get a handful of hate, not a slew of messages about how much I’ve helped some people. People I haven’t talked to since middle/high school reached out, as well as people on the opposite side of the political spectrum; all with positive messages. I expected and welcomed any/all attention I would get from this. We all know how the world sees trans people. But, much to my surprise, I was loved. And the fact that I was even able to help one person, made it all worth it.

And this leads me to why I’m starting a blog. If I can just help one person, in any way, just from one coming out post, imagine what I could do documenting my experience? For every person that reached out, there’s five more who are too shy, but feeling the same thing. One thing that took a long time to learn was that we’re not alone. Even if you think your thoughts and feelings are so niched down, someone else is having the same experience. Not everyone is vocal about it. So, I will be.

Although being trans is a huge part of my life, it’s not the only thing about me. So this blog will not solely focus on trans stuff. What will it be about you ask? I have no idea. We’re all going to figure it out as I go.

And that leaves us at the end of my first post. Thanks for reading this far. I hope your seatbelt is buckled, because you’re in for a ride.

  • Hi, I'm Wes! I’m just someone who likes to write, read, and think a little too much about life. I care a lot about people, connection, and the stories we carry. My writing is a place where I try to make sense of things and share what I’ve learned (or still figuring out).
