Podcast: Uncharted Waters

Here’s the truth about why I started a blog.

I always need some kind of creative outlet. So, Kristen and I were going to start a podcast but then our schedules weren’t matching up to do that, so I started this blog instead. We’ve been meaning to start this specific podcast for at least 2 years now. Really, the posts I have written and planned for this blog are topics we will also be discussing in a podcast eventually. It’s called Uncharted Waters with the tagline: Diving into taboo topics and life’s depths. Encompasses our love for sharks/the ocean and talking about juicy stuff (there is an Instagram account for this).

This will not be the first podcast we have started together. Back in March 2019, Kristen and I debuted our first podcast called “Socially Inept.” This podcast is still available online wherever you listen to podcasts. I don’t recommend listening to it, but it’s there. We started it when we were both in college and we didn’t live together. Our schedules were not lined up at all, so we quickly dropped off from it. I really liked it while it lasted though, and have thought about restarting it ever since.

If you don’t already know, Kristen and I have a really open and honest relationship. We find ourselves very often talking about taboo topics or things that would probably get us looked at weird. So why not publicize it? Nobody has an original thought. People are sometimes so afraid to voice their thoughts but I feel like we’d feel less alone if we didn’t care what others thought (as long as these thoughts are not harmful to others lol).

I love this blog, even though I don’t write a post very often. People don’t like to read as much as I do, so posts are often skipped. Or people don’t have the time to read, even though the posts are about maybe a 4 minute read. I get it, reading is exhausting sometimes. Podcasts though, people eat them up. You can listen to them while you drive, cook, clean, or do anything else. Humans have terrible attention spans.

With a blog, it’s one sided. You only get to read what I write. That leaves no room for discussion or debate or anything of that kind. With a podcast, it’ll feel like you’re just sitting in on one of our late night conversations. We don’t tend to hold back. And trust me, there are a lot of things we talk about.

I didn’t want to start the podcast until I came out publicly because I wanted to start it as Wes. Plus, I wanted to talk about my journey and experiences and also have Kristen speak on her experience with me coming out. Obviously, I couldn’t talk about that before I came out. For Christmas I got a nice podcasting set. Still boxed up, but begging for me to put it to use. Should everyone start a podcast? Absolutely not. Should we? We’re going to anyway.

When will Uncharted Waters debut? No idea. Whenever Kristen and I decide to actually sit down and record. But I’m very excited for it, and we already have a shit ton of episodes planned. It’ll be fun. Lots more can be said in a 40 minute podcast episode than a 4 minute read on a blog post. And we have A LOT to say.

  • Hi, I'm Wes! I’m just someone who likes to write, read, and think a little too much about life. I care a lot about people, connection, and the stories we carry. My writing is a place where I try to make sense of things and share what I’ve learned (or still figuring out).
