My wife, Kristen, and I have been together for 8 ½ years. Married for 2 ½. She was only my second real relationship when we met. I guess first if we don’t count the very immature relationship I had before her. Anywho, we’ve been through a lot, and we’re stronger than ever. So, I thought I’d write a post about our beginning.
Kristen and I were a school year apart. She was a senior in high school when I attended my first year of college. We have always lived 30 minutes from each other our whole lives, but opposite sides of the river. I went to a college on my side of the river. I quickly realized it felt like 13th grade for me because I was going to school with people I’ve already spent the last 4 years with. I wanted to meet new people.
So, for my second year of college (Kristen’s first year of college), I attended the school across the river where I would meet my future wife. We had a few classes together that semester. We did not talk until a month before the semester ended. We had like 2 classes together, and we still never talked. I also had a girlfriend at the time.
It wasn’t until our film production class was doing a project on sound that we really acknowledged each other. Our class had to split into smaller groups and go into these audio rooms to complete sounds projects. I took a room first so that I didn’t have to choose who I worked with. Then Kristen filed in with another kid, Jack.
Still, Kristen and I really didn’t talk. I definitely thought she was cute, but wasn’t my type. And again, I had a girlfriend at the time. I started to then notice her more in my editing class. She was the only one I recognized because I had two class with her. I remember going up to her in our editing class and asking about her project there. Something was drawing me to her and I just had to get to know her. Again, I had a girlfriend at the time. She was super shy. If I never went up to her, we wouldn’t be here today.
The first time I talked to Kristen 1-1 in our editing class, I went home and immediately messaged her on Instagram. Yes, I did slide into her DMs. I might have actually given her my number that night, too. We haven’t stopped talking since. During our Thanksgiving break, I asked Kristen to go to the movies with me, and she said no! Rude. But I understood why. I wanted to watch Fantastic Beasts and it took years into our relationship for me to actually watch it for the first time.
I fell really hard really fast, but I had a girlfriend. The girl and I were long distance and I started drifting from her immediately as I started talking to Kristen. I for sure bordered emotional cheating (this is wrong) during this whole time I talked to Kristen, and then ultimately ended the relationship I was in. The next day, I kissed Kristen in the parking lot.
A little over a week after I kissed Kristen I told her I loved her. We weren’t even dating yet. Somehow, she didn’t see that as a red flag. A few days later I asked her to be my girlfriend. She actually met my dad and brother the same day. From the day we started talking to the day I asked her to be my girlfriend, only 2 weeks had passed. Talk about Uhaul lesbians.
We’ve been through so much since 2016. Long distance, moving in together, covid, moving back home to our parents, moving in together again, moving to South Carolina, getting married, moving to Florida, my transition. There’s no one else in this world I’d rather do life with, though. There’s a lot more to our story, but I’ll save that for a podcast episode.
